Vipers pounces late to return to winning ways

Vipers SC registered a hard-fought 1-0 victory over newcomers Lugazi FC in a game played under the lights on Thursday evening.

Karim Watambala returned from suspension with decesive impact, netting the lone goal that separated the two teams at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

The home team showed full desire for maximum points inside the opening minutes having stumbled in the previous game against SC Villa in Wankulukuku.

Vipers’ players like Watambala, Allan Okello, Sukuya and Marvin Joseph Youngman came close to scoring only to be denied by the outstanding Juma Mutebi at halftime.

The Venoms finally broke the deadlock after restart, Karim Watambala with a long- range strike in the 66th minute to send the home crowd into frenzy.

Allan Okello nearly doubled the lead with a header 8 minutes later but his effort rafted the post before another opportunity from a one on one situation, leaving the advantage unchanged.

Vipers SC stayed top in the standings, with 52 points, 5 ahead of second-placed NEC FC who visit UPDF FC at Bombo Military Ground on Friday.

Lugazi FC, who succumbed to a second consecutive league defeat, are 11th with 26 points from 22 games in the Startimes Uganda Premier League.
