Vipers moved closer to a potential seventh league Championship following a hard-fought and gritty 1-0 victory over resilient UPDF FC under the lights on Tuesday evening.
Congolese forward Gusto Mulongo came off the bench at start of the second half to head home the solitary goal that separated the two sides at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The home team started aggressively, pushing Paul Kiwanuka’s troops deep into their own half and creating a flurry of goal scoring opportunities.
Vipers launching relentless attacks at the goal of the visitors thought they had broke the deadlock in the 20th minute from the foot of team captain Milton Karisa, but it was ruled out for offside.
Heading into the break, Karim Watambala teasing header was easily collected by stand out goal keeper Richard Anyama before Karisa firing his effort wide few moments later.
The decesive blow came in the 73rd minute when Mulongo pounced on a round to head home the winner, sparking wild celebrations among the Vipers’ fans in attendance.
Vipers extended their lead at the summit, now on 62 points in the standings, 8 ahead of second-placed NEC FC who travelled to Western part of the country to confront Mbarara City at Kakyeka.
