Vipers SC, chasing a 7th crown in the Startimes Uganda Premier League, took another huge step towards their target as they narrowly pipped Maroons FC 1-0 on Thursday evening.
League top-scorer and danger man Allan Okello scored the solitary goal that separated the two sides at Luzira Prisons Ground.
Wary of the danger poised by the visitors, Maroons came into the clash with a very disciplined approach that afforded the venoms no room to enjoy their usual game.
After holding Vipers for most parts of the opening half, Maroons conceded a penalty following a hand ball inside the forbidden area just two minutes on return from the break.
Allan Okello, seized the moment, successfully beating goalkeeper Hassan Matovu from the 18-yards to put the travelers ahead in the 47th minute.
The concession did not deter the hosts who continued pressing hard for the leveller and showed no fear towards their more fancied opponents.
Maroons could could have stolen it right at the death but Norman Borniface’s effort from close range was denied by the cross bar in the 87th minute.
With the victory, Vipers extended their lead at the summit, now on 59 points in 25 games, 8 eight clear of second-placed NEC who host Mbale Heroes on Friday.
