Vipers Sports Club paid a heartfelt tribute to their late forward, Abubakar Lawal, over the weekend at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, following his tragic death on February 24, 2025.
The club organized a special “dua” prayer session, bringing together teammates, officials, fans, and members of the Ugandan football community to remember the Nigerian footballer.

Vipers SC President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa delivered a moving eulogy, praising Lawal’s professionalism and character. “Lawal was the true definition of a professional player,” Dr. Mulindwa stated. “He was disciplined, humble, kind, and possessed integrity. He made a profound impact both on and off the field.”
Lawal’s brother, Mansoor, expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Mulindwa and Vipers SC for their support in repatriating his brother’s body to Nigeria, acknowledging the club’s emotional and logistical assistance during the difficult time.

Vipers SC captain Milton Karisa reflected on the loss, describing Lawal as “a great person” and extending condolences to his family in Nigeria. The club also announced they would provide Lawal’s family with six months’ salary, recognizing his role as the primary provider for his nine brothers and two daughters.
Lawal joined Vipers SC in 2022 and played a key role in the club’s historic domestic double in the 2022/23 season, securing both the Ugandan Premier League title and the Uganda Cup. His contributions solidified his reputation as one of the most outstanding foreign players in Ugandan football history.
The circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death remain under investigation. While initial reports suggested a motorbike accident, Ugandan police later clarified that he fell from the third floor of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Bwebajja.
The Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) have called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. The memorial at St. Mary’s Stadium served as a powerful testament to Lawal’s impact on Vipers SC and the football community, ensuring his legacy will endure.
