Vipers assume league summit with win in Lawal farewell match

This was the first game the venoms were in action since the demise of the Nigerian International.

Vipers SC pipped the Ankole Lions of Mbarara City 1-0 in a game dedicated to former player Abubakar Lawal for his legacy and contribution to the club.

Allan okello second half goal was the only difference that separated the two sides at St Mary’s Stadium under the floodlights on Sunday.

The match commenced with a moment of silence before kick-off in honor of Lawal who passed away under unclear circumstances on Monday, February 24, 2024.

The opening half of football ended in a barren stalemate, both teams unable to find back of the net heading into the break.

The decisive moment of the contest arrived in the 66th minute after a foul on forward Yunus Sentamu by Ndifuna Benard inside the penalty box.

Okello converted from the spot with ease, a strike that earned the hosts maximum points and a perfect send-off for the departed soul from Sokoto.

Vipers, reclaimed the top position, moving three points (43pts) above second-placed NEC FC whilst Mbarara City sit 12th on the log with 20 points from 18 games played so far this season.
