VIDEO: Major tournament – CAF replies Carragher

AFCON is not a major tournament- Nigerian Journalist backs Jamie Carragher's claim

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has responded to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s comments dismissing the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a major tournament.

Carragher’s remarks sparked a heated debate, with former Manchester City defender Micah Richards and former England striker Daniel Sturridge jumping to AFCON’s defense.

CAF has now weighed in on the discussion, sharing a post on X with photos highlighting AFCON’s importance.

The post simply reads, “Major Tournament. That’s the tweet.”

Carragher’s comments were made during Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Manchester City in the Premier League, where he suggested that Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or could be hindered by Egypt’s lack of success on the global stage.

However, Richards and Sturridge were quick to disagree, emphasizing AFCON’s significance.

Richards stated, “AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying ‘they aren’t taking it seriously.’ AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know.”

Sturridge added, “If you win the Euros or Copa America, it’s deemed to be big, so the AFCON is on the same level.”

CAF’s response serves as a reminder of AFCON’s importance and reputation as a premier international football tournament.
