Ugandan Joanita scores first goal in India after a national call-up

The Crested Cranes International is one of the five Ugandans plying their trade in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) this season.

On her third attempt, forward Joanita Ainembabazi finally got off the mark at Kickstart FC, scoring her maiden goal in the 1-1 stalemate against Odisha FC.

A goalless draw in the opening 45 minutes, the 25-year-old broke the deadlock first on return in the 70th minute at Bangalore Football Stadium.

Her moment was cut short in the 82rd minute, Lynda Kom Serto pulling off a leveller to salvage a point for the defending Champions.

The strike for Ainembabazi comes two days after her inclusion in Crested Cranes squad preparing for the 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers against Ethiopia later this month.

Besides her, compatriots Fazila Ikwaput (league top scorer), and Resty Nanziri are the other players in the Asian country that were invited by head coach Sheryl Botes.
