The Ugandan International becomes the latest talent from Africa to storm the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States.
Washington Spirit finally confirmed the acquisition of Crested Cranes defender Shadia Nankya in a dream move to the biggest league in women’s football.
The 24-year-old joins Washington on a two year with 2027 and 2028 team options in a transfer from Egypt’s FC Masar.
“The Spirit has offered me an opportunity to grow and develop my football talent and with this comes world-class training facilities and coaches supporting me,” said Nankya.
Labelled as a landmark for women football in Uganda, she expressed gratitude to her new paymasters and the inspiration it drives back to the young girls at home in Kampala, and East Africa as a region.
“Playing at the highest level in women’s football at the Spirit will also serve as an inspiration to thousands of girls in primary and secondary schools in Uganda, the wider East African region and also locally in Washington, D.C.”
Rose to prominence while playing at Uganda Martyrs WFC, Nankya made her senior international debut for Uganda women’s national team in 2021.
From Lubaga, proceeded to UCU Lady Cardinals, and then Masar FC in 2024 where she amassed 27 appearances, scoring 3 goals and contributing to 19 clean sheets.
