Lobi Stars, a Nigeria Premier Football League club, has taken drastic measures to avoid relegation by imposing pay cuts on players who are not meeting the team’s standards.
With 10 games left to play in the current campaign, the club’s management has decided to take a tough stance on underperforming players.
According to Emmanuel Ujah, the club’s media officer, some players who are earning as much as ₦600,000 per month have not been pulling their weight on the pitch.

“Some players are taking as much as six hundred thousand naira a month, and they have not touched a ball for the first and second stanzas,” Ujah revealed in an interview with News Central.
The decision to impose pay cuts was made clear by the Benue State Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Creativity, Rt. Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange, during the unveiling of Tope Bulus as the team’s new head coach.
Commissioner Ikyange warned the players that their livelihoods were at stake, saying, “Only those who deliver on the pitch will get paid. Going forward.”
The move is seen as a desperate attempt by the club to avoid relegation, with the team struggling to find form in the current campaign. The appointment of Tope Bulus as the new head coach is also seen as a bid to turn the team’s fortunes around, after the exit of Muhammed Babaganaru following three winless matches.
