Thank you Abeokuta - Rinsola Babajide celebrates first Super Falcons start with assist and emotional tribute

Super Falcons forward Rinsola Babajide has expressed her joy and gratitude after making her first-ever start for Nigeria’s senior women’s team in a 2-0 friendly win over Cameroon on Tuesday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

The 26-year-old winger, who had previously featured as a substitute in earlier games, was named in the starting XI for the first time — and made an immediate impact by assisting the team’s second goal in the spirited victory over the Indomitable Lionesses.

Speaking after the match, Babajide reflected on the emotional significance of the moment, especially as her father watched her live from the stands.

“What an overwhelming feeling making my first start in front of my dad ❤️,” she wrote on social media. “Priceless moments like this last a lifetime. Grateful to God! Enjoyed playing out there with the team tonight!”

She went on to praise her teammates and the atmosphere in Abeokuta, adding, “What a win and great performance from everyone today! Thank you Abeokuta for all the love.”

Babajide’s impressive display and growing confidence come at a crucial time as the Super Falcons continue preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where Nigeria will be chasing a record-extending tenth continental title.

Her performance will no doubt give head coach Justine Madugu more attacking options and reinforce the belief that the Falcons have the depth and quality to reclaim African dominance in Morocco later this year.
