The National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Isaiah Benjamin, has called upon journalists covering the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, “Gateway Games 2024,” in Abeokuta to adhere to the highest ethical standards and avoid disseminating unverified information.
Benjamin made this appeal on Monday while addressing members of the press at the media center situated within the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta.
He commended the Ogun State government for the impressive commencement of the sporting spectacle, highlighted by a spectacular opening ceremony graced by the presence of President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, alongside other prominent figures from across the nation.
While acknowledging that perfection may not have been achieved, Benjamin lauded the state government for the strong foundation laid, suggesting that the success of the opening ceremony provides a solid base to potentially make this edition the best National Sports Festival in Nigeria’s history.
“We are here basically to report the Gateway Games 2024,” Benjamin stated.
“Everything may not be working perfectly, but with what we saw during the opening ceremony, a colourful opening ceremony, I think we should give it to the state government, it was a pretty good start.”
He then emphasized the importance of journalistic integrity, urging reporters to seek clarity on any unclear issues.
“However, in case you come across issues you are unclear about, please ask questions, the media committee is here to answer you, and the rule in journalism also says that you should leave out if you are in doubt.”
Benjamin further advised journalists to maintain exemplary conduct, dress appropriately, and be mindful of their presence in designated areas.
He also stressed the paramount importance of their safety throughout the duration of the festival.
He also announced that SWAN would follow its customary practice of holding its convention during the National Sports Festival.
This convention will serve as a platform to assess the sporting event and subsequently issue a communique outlining their observations and findings.
Benjamin assured the journalists that concerns regarding accreditation and transportation would be addressed with the relevant authorities to facilitate a smoother working environment for the media.
The Chairman of the Media Committee of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Kunle Solaja, echoed Benjamin’s sentiments and pledged the committee’s full support to ensure that journalists covering the NSF are provided with all the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively.
