Super Falcons set to depart Lisbon for Casablanca as WAFCON preparations enter final phase

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the Super Falcons will depart Lisbon for Casablanca on Wednesday, marking a key step in their final preparations ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The nine-time African champions are expected to shift their base to Casablanca, where they will face arch-rivals Ghana’s Black Queens in a final warm-up match on Sunday, June 29, just days before the tournament kicks off on July 5.

Super Falcons hold Portugal in impressive Friendly performance

Before departing Portugal, the Falcons put up a gritty and disciplined display in a friendly against European giants Portugal, battling to a goalless draw in Lisbon on Monday. The result was even more remarkable considering the Nigerian team only arrived a day before the fixture due to logistical delays.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was the standout performer, producing a string of world-class saves to frustrate a Portuguese side ranked 14 spots above Nigeria in the FIFA rankings. The Paris FC shot-stopper denied early efforts from Diana Silva and then made three point-blank saves in rapid succession from Jessica Silva, Fatima Pinto, and Andreia Norton, preserving a well-earned clean sheet.

Super Falcons focus turns to Ghana clash and Group stage

With the Portugal test now behind them, the focus shifts to the final warm-up match against Ghana in Morocco — a match that promises to be a key test of the team’s readiness for the continental tournament.

Nigeria is drawn in Group B at the WAFCON alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria, with all matches scheduled to take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.

Head coach Justine Madugu will be hoping to fine-tune his tactics and build chemistry within the squad as the Super Falcons aim to reclaim the continental title and extend their record haul to ten championships.
