South Sudan overlooks UPL players in squad for World Cup Qualifiers

The Bright Star are in group B in the qualifying pathway to the final global tournament in Mexico, Canada and USA.

South Sudan national head coach, Nicolas Dupuis has announced his preliminary squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

The roster consists of 31 players, with majority of the invited talents coming from the South Sudan Premier league.

Surprisingly this time round, numbers from the Uganda Premier League are limited compared to the past gatherings.

One player from the top-flight division in Uganda makes the cut, Rashid Okocha who plays for NEC FC in the neighboring country.

This highlights growth in the status of South Sudan football and the decision to start a league at home in 2024 is finally bearing fruits now.

The summoned roster is dominated by Jamus SC players, an entity that competes in the South Sudan Premier League.

This month, the Bright Star will confront Sudan and DR Congo, trained by former Uganda Cranes tactician, Sebastian Desabre.
