Former Super Eagles forward Peter Odemwingie has expressed his satisfaction that Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface did not complete a transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr during the January transfer window.
Earlier this year, Boniface was reportedly close to joining Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr following Anderson Talisca’s move to Fenerbahçe SK. However, the deal ultimately fell through, with the Saudi club opting to sign Colombian forward Jhon Durán instead.
Speaking to Africafoot, Odemwingie voiced his relief at this outcome, stating that Boniface possesses the qualities to excel at the highest level of European football. He suggested that a move to Saudi Arabia at this stage of the young striker’s career would have hindered his development.
“Honestly, I saw his possible departure for Saudi Arabia last January as a waste,” Odemwingie said.
He continued, “Fortunately, it didn’t happen, and I think it’s a good thing for his career. Victor is a player of inestimable talent.”

The 24-year-old Boniface has been a revelation for Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen side, playing a pivotal role in their historic first Bundesliga title win and their journey to the final of the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League.
Odemwingie is confident that Boniface’s impressive performances will attract significant interest from elite clubs across Europe in the upcoming transfer window. He believes the Nigerian international has the attributes to succeed in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
“I’m convinced that by the next transfer window, he’ll have several offers from big European teams, and he’ll have to take on this challenge,” Odemwingie added.
“He has the profile, for example, to make his mark in England or Spain. He’s a young striker who can still improve on certain details of his game, and I think he would be a great addition to his next club.”
Boniface’s continued strong form for Leverkusen, having scored eight goals in 18 domestic league matches, further supports Odemwingie’s assessment and suggests that he will indeed be a sought-after player in the summer transfer market.
