Nigeria World Cup dashed as Zimbabwe stuns Super Eagles with late Equalizer in Uyo

A late goal from Tawanda Chirewa shattered Nigerian hopes, as Zimbabwe secured a 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles in their World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Tuesday.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle opted for continuity, fielding the same lineup that triumphed over Rwanda, with Victor Osimhen leading the attack alongside Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Moses Simon.

Nigeria started aggressively, dominating possession and creating early chances, with Osimhen heavily involved. However, Zimbabwe’s determined defense held firm, keeping the score level at halftime.

The second half mirrored the first, with Nigeria pushing for a breakthrough but finding Zimbabwe’s defense resolute. The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute, when Ola Aina delivered a perfect cross for Victor Osimhen to head home, sparking celebrations.

However, just as Nigeria seemed poised for victory, Tawanda Chirewa struck late, leveling the score and securing a valuable point for Zimbabwe.

The frustrating draw leaves Nigeria fourth in Group C with seven points, while Zimbabwe remains at the bottom with four points and no wins.

In other group results, South Africa defeated Benin Republic 2-0, extending their lead to 13 points, while Rwanda’s 1-1 draw with Lesotho moved them to second place.
