More than Osimhen – Super Eagles captain rejects Victor’s reliance claim

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has refuted suggestions that the Nigerian national team is overly dependent on striker Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen’s two goals secured a crucial 2-0 victory for Nigeria against Rwanda, marking his return to the World Cup qualifiers after missing four games in which Nigeria failed to win.

However, speaking ahead of Nigeria’s match against Zimbabwe, Troost-Ekong dismissed this notion. “When the team plays well together, every individual shines. Even if you look at the Rwanda game, you have to highlight more than just Victor Osimhen’s performance,” he stated.

He emphasized the collective effort, saying, “I think almost every player played his role. The substitutes contributed as well, and even players who featured out of position, like Yusuf [Alhassan], made an impact.

“There are different factors at play, so I don’t think it’s fair to say we rely on one player—that’s not the mentality of the team.”

Troost-Ekong stressed the importance of teamwork and unity. “We work hard together, we support each other, and when we do that, we achieve more as a team,” he concluded.
