Nigeria international Monday Gift has opened up on her surprising exclusion from the Super Falcons’ squad for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, taking to social media to share a heartfelt message of strength, unity, and patriotism.
The 23-year-old forward, who currently plays for Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), has been in impressive form since joining the club in March, scoring four goals and providing one assist in nine league appearances.

Despite her strong performances, Monday was left out of the 24-player squad announced by head coach Justine Madugu for the tournament, which kicks off on July 5th.
Reacting to the snub, the former FC Robo Queens star took to X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging her disappointment but maintaining a gracious and patriotic tone.
“Sometimes the hardest moments reveal the strength of our hearts,” she wrote.
“I have seen the official squad list for the upcoming WAFCON tournament and yes, my name isn’t on it. While it hurts and is a tough pill to swallow, I want to make it clear that I hold no grudges, no resentment. I am hale and hearty, fully fit, and still deeply in love with the game and the green white green.”
Gift Monday emphasized her continued support for the team and her belief in their ability to make the country proud.
“Though I won’t be on the pitch with the team in Morocco, my heart will be there every step of the way. I remain fully committed to cheering my country from home, lifting every prayer and every shout of support for the badge we all fight so hard to represent.”
