Kwara United have been crowned 2025 President Federation Cup champions after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Abakaliki FC in a tense final at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.
The historic win marks the first time in the club’s history that they are lifting Nigeria’s oldest and most prestigious cup competition.
Despite being favourites heading into the final, Tunde Sanni’s Kwara United side could not break down a resilient Abakaliki FC team over 90 minutes. The match ended 0-0 in regulation time, with both sides failing to convert several promising chances.
Kwara United created the better openings, but poor finishing especially in the second half meant the tie had to be settled from the spot.
Abakaliki FC, who were relegated from the Nigeria National League (NNL) this season and will compete in the Nationwide League next term, put up a commendable fight. Despite their underdog status, they matched the Harmony Boys in determination and tactical discipline.
Their road to the final had already been a fairy-tale run, and though they fell short at the final hurdle, their spirited display won the hearts of many fans.
Penalty Shootout Heroics
In the nerve-wracking shootout, Kwara United held their nerve, converting four of their five spot kicks. Abakaliki FC, on the other hand, managed to score only three, handing the title to the Ilorin-based club.
With this victory, Kwara United have not only claimed silverware but also secured a ticket to represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup next season, subject to licensing and confirmation from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
