Italian legend rates Ademola Lookman higher than Leao ahead of Milan-Atalanta clash

Ademola Lookman

Former Italy international Roberto Donadoni has sparked debate by stating his belief that Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman is currently performing at a higher level than AC Milan star Rafael Leao.

The two influential attackers are set to go head-to-head when AC Milan host Atalanta in a crucial Serie A encounter at the San Siro on Saturday.

Lookman has established himself as a key player in the Italian top flight since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022. The Nigerian international has been instrumental in Atalanta’s success, even earning the club’s Player of the Season award for the past two campaigns.

His pivotal role in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League triumph last season, which included a memorable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen, further solidified his reputation.

This season, the 27-year-old has registered an impressive 13 goals and five assists in 26 league appearances for La Dea.

Speaking to Milannews ahead of the weekend’s fixture, Donadoni didn’t hesitate in his assessment.

“Both strikers can decide the match, but if I had to choose, I’d bet on Lookman,” the former Milan midfielder stated.

Donadoni elaborated on his preference, citing Lookman’s consistency. “So far he’s been more consistent, he’s fundamental for Gasperini, and he already proved it in the reverse fixture. Leão has had ups and downs, and this year he has struggled quite a bit to find consistency.”

While Leao is undoubtedly a gifted player capable of moments of brilliance, Donadoni’s assessment highlights Lookman’s sustained impact for Atalanta.

The Nigerian’s goal-scoring record in Serie A this season surpasses Leao’s (13 to 7), although the Milan winger has provided more assists (8 to Lookman’s 5).
