Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has passionately called on his former club to prioritise the signing of Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen in the summer transfer window.
The former England international cited the Nigerian’s experience and prolific goalscoring record as crucial additions to their struggling attack.
Despite appointing Ruben Amorim as manager in November 2024, Manchester United have endured a disappointing season, particularly in front of goal. Their tally of 37 Premier League goals is among the lowest in the division, leading to criticism of their current striking options, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to find the net consistently.
Ferdinand believes Osimhen is the answer to their goalscoring woes and urged the club to make a determined effort to secure his signature.
“We need Osimhen, we need experience, we need someone who knows how to score, we need someone who can come and show these young strikers at Man United how to do it. If I’m Man United, I’m making it happen,” the Premier League legend insisted on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.
To potentially facilitate the move and tempt Napoli, Ferdinand even suggested a bold swap deal involving young winger Alejandro Garnacho.
“I want someone who knows their way around the full pitch at the elite level and knows how to score at the elite level consistently. I want him here and now. Yes Osimhen hasn’t played in the Premier League but I don’t care, I think he scores wherever he goes,” he added, expressing his unwavering confidence in the Nigerian’s ability to adapt.
Osimhen has been a long-term target for Manchester United. Still, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has indicated that the move is far from guaranteed due to the striker’s high salary demands, the overall cost of the deal, and the club’s consideration of more budget-friendly alternatives.
