The newly appointed tactician is confident that his team will overcome the East African counterparts in the upcoming continental Qualifiers.
Before Ethiopia embarked on the journey to Kampala, Uganda, Head Coach Joseph Gebrewold assured the locals back home of success in the 2026 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) play-offs.
The Lucy are set to face regional neighbors Uganda on 21st and 26th February, 2025 in the Qualifiers that lead to the final tournament in Morocco.
“The Ugandan team is known to be strong. They have a lot of professional players who play abroad. They even played a friendly match two months ago. They played friendlies against Morocco, Democratic Republic of Congo and Algeria. We have tried to get videos of those matches and watch them. We are working on what their strengths and weaknesses are. The Ugandan team has knocked us out of the competition before, but that doesn’t mean they will knock us out again. We have prepared very well, even though it was short.” Stated Coach Gebrewold
The new man in charge further disclosed how he expects his side to behave in the first leg scheduled this Friday at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
“We will try to go as far as we can with the tactics that are appropriate for the first game, since it is away from home. When we return, we will try to finish the big thing there, since the game is at home. The biggest thing is to try to do what we can on the field.” Coach Gebrewold concluded
Not the first time these two countries have met, a few years ago Uganda eliminated Ethiopia in the same Qualifiers to participate at the 2022 edition in Morocco.
Ethiopia already sent a Staunch warning to opponents Uganda in the past weeks. The Lucy dismantled Djibouti 17-0 on aggregate in two friendlies staged at Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.
