The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced a significant increase in prize money for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), as excitement builds ahead of the continental showpiece set to begin this weekend in Morocco.
According to CAF, the winner of this year’s tournament will walk away with $1 million, a major increase aimed at promoting women’s football across the continent.
Prize Money Breakdown:
Champion – $1 million
Runner-up – $500,000
Third Place – $350,000
CAF also confirmed that the bonuses for all participating teams will be adjusted upwards, reflecting its commitment to the growth and professionalization of women’s football in Africa.
“The Confederation remains committed to elevating women’s football and rewarding excellence,” CAF said in its official statement.
This year’s WAFCON features 12 qualified nations as the tournament kicks off on Saturday, June 15, with hosts Morocco facing Zambia’s Copper Queens in the opening match.
Nigeria eye 10th WAFCON title
The Super Falcons of Nigeria, the most successful team in the tournament’s history with nine titles, begin their quest for a record-extending 10th title on Sunday, June 16, against Tunisia in Casablanca.
The Nigerian squad, led by veteran striker Asisat Oshoala, is riding high on confidence as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) brands this campaign “Mission X”. The Falcons will also face Botswana on July 9 and Algeria on July 13 in the group stage.
