Ahmed Musa and Rabiu Ali strike as Kano Pillars dent Rivers United’s title hopes

Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa and veteran midfielder Rabiu Ali were the heroes for Kano Pillars as they secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Rivers United in a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 35 encounter on Friday.

The win at the Sani Abacha Stadium significantly impacted the NPFL title race, denting Rivers United’s aspirations and boosting Kano Pillars’ chances of securing a coveted continental ticket.

Ahmed Musa, the experienced forward, broke the deadlock for the Sai Masu Gida four minutes past the hour mark, sending the home fans into jubilation. The victory was sealed in the 74th minute when the ever-reliable Rabiu Ali calmly converted a penalty, putting the game beyond George Finidi’s Rivers United.

The result propelled Usman Abdallah’s Kano Pillars to sixth position on the league table, amassing 50 points from 35 games. This places them firmly in contention for a spot in next season’s CAF competitions.

For Rivers United, the defeat is a significant setback in their pursuit of the NPFL title. They remain in second position with 58 points, also from 35 matches, but now face an uphill battle to catch league leaders Remo Stars.

Remo Stars, who currently sit atop the NPFL standings with 65 points, are now on the cusp of history. A victory against Niger Tornadoes in their matchday 35 fixture in Ikenne on Sunday will see them crowned champions of the 2025 Nigeria Premier Football League.
