The sudden and tragic death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda has sent shockwaves through the football community and prompted calls for a comprehensive investigation.
Lawal, a forward for Uganda Premier League side Vipers Sports Club, died on February 24th under circumstances that remain unclear, leading to demands for transparency from the Nigerian government.

Lawal, who had established himself as a key player for Vipers SC, was reportedly found dead after an incident at Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kajjansi, a town near Kampala.
Initial police reports indicate that Lawal had visited a Tanzanian friend, Omary Naima, at her residence within the shopping complex. Naima claims to have left Lawal preparing tea in her room, only to learn later that he had fallen from the third floor.

The incident has raised numerous questions, prompting the Nigerian government to take decisive action. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has publicly expressed her concerns, labelling the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death as “pathetic and suspicious.”
“This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover up at all. This is so sad!” Dabiri-Erewa stated. “The Nigerian government will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation. May his soul Rest in Peace and God give the family the fortitude to bear this loss.”
The Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has formally requested a full autopsy and a detailed investigation into the incident.
Ugandan authorities, through the Kajjansi Police Division, have confirmed they are actively investigating the circumstances. They have recovered Lawal’s personal belongings, including smartphones and training gear, and are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage from the shopping mall.
Lawal’s journey to Vipers SC began in July 2022, and he quickly became a vital part of the team’s success.
He played a crucial role in Vipers SC’s league and cup double triumph in 2023, earning the respect and admiration of teammates and fans alike. Before his time in Uganda, Lawal had experience playing for AS Kigali in Rwanda and several clubs in the Nigerian Premier Football League, including Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC, and FC Nasarawa.
Beyond his football career, Lawal was also a student in his final year at Cavendish University in Uganda, further adding to the tragedy of his untimely death.
