The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has officially announced that the 2025/26 season will begin on August 22, 2025, and run through May 24, 2026, as revealed by NPFL Board Chairman Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye during a media briefing held at the league headquarters in Abuja.
Hon. Elegbeleye stated that the new season’s calendar aligns with international football standards, marking a continued push toward professionalism, structure, and consistency in Nigerian football.
“We are committed to maintaining a regular and predictable football calendar. It’s key to growing our league’s credibility both locally and globally,” Elegbeleye said.

Reflecting on the recently concluded 2024/25 NPFL season, Elegbeleye highlighted key milestones that showcased progress in both performance and management.
Remo Stars emerged champions in dominant fashion, sealing the title with three games to spare after a crucial matchday 35 victory over Nasarawa United at the Lafia City Stadium.
The season featured 380 matches, with 20 teams playing 38 games each (home and away). A total of: 286 wins, 92 draws, 552 home goals, 1,180 yellow and red cards, and 16 missed penalties were recorded.
Yusuf Anas stole the spotlight as the league’s top scorer, netting 18 goals, including back-to-back hat-tricks — a rare feat in NPFL history. He was closely followed by veteran midfielder Rabiu Ali, who scored 13 goals.
Media Coverage and Financial Discipline on the Rise
Elegbeleye also lauded improvements in media visibility, revealing that over 400 games were broadcast live during the season.
“This is a major step in improving fan engagement and the commercial appeal of the league. The increased coverage helps clubs attract sponsors and gives players deserved exposure,” he noted.
He further acknowledged progress in player welfare and financial responsibility across clubs.
“Cases of unpaid salaries and bonuses have significantly dropped. Clubs are adhering to stricter financial guidelines, and that has enhanced morale and professionalism,” he added.
The NPFL boss confirmed that the 2025/26 league champions will take home a ₦200 million prize, a move aimed at boosting competition and rewarding excellence.
“The new prize money reflects our vision for a more competitive and rewarding NPFL. Clubs now have a bigger incentive to perform at the highest level,” said Elegbeleye.
With improved structure, greater visibility, and increased incentives, the NPFL appears poised for another exciting season of top-flight Nigerian football.
